Caring for gold, diamond and pearl jewellery
Wear it well
Jewellery lasts longest when it is treated as the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Perfume, hairspray and lotions leave a film that dulls both metal and stones.
Gold and platinum
Soak for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry. Do this every few weeks for pieces you wear daily.
Diamonds and hard gemstones
Diamonds attract grease, which dulls their sparkle. The same soapy soak restores it. Have prongs and settings checked once a year for wear.
Pearls
Pearls are organic and soft. Wipe them with a damp cloth after wearing and let them dry before storing. Keep them away from perfume, soap and heat.
What to avoid
- Chlorine and bleach, which can discolour metals.
- Swimming, bathing and exercise.
- Ultrasonic cleaners for pearls and some coloured stones.
- Toothpaste and abrasive powders, which scratch.
Store it properly
Keep each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box, fasten chains to prevent tangles and store silver in an airtight bag.
